Kuopio is a big peninsula into lake Kallavesi. Winter here lasts five to six months. That's October/November to March. Jan-Feb is very cold. Well, the midwinter ice is called teräsjää, 'steel ice', which is a pretty good indicator to the ice strength. There's a couple fully operational roads across the lake ice in winter and they even hold trotting races on the lakes.

Do yall go ice fishing? I went ice fishing in Minnesota and it was super fun. The ice was strong enough to hold 4 wheelers. The only water that freezes in Texas is like little puddles and stuff.

No, I don't fancy it. (Pilkkiä/pilkkiminen.)

How does that work? Do you actually catch fish?

Yeah. You see, the water under the ice is molten, so some fishies are active even at wintertime.

Yeah you actually catch fish. I caught the first fish! Although now it's best to practise catch and release since there is such a shortage of fish. Supposedly this generations' future children will not be eating fish.

Shortage? Not here. At least, we still get a ton of fish and no notices have been posted in the school about the impending threath of fishlessness.

Well as long as people like eating fish, there will always be fish. Maybe not in the lakes, and maybe not the exotic inedible fish, but they will survive nonetheless. That's what I say to my Dad about chickens when he talks about the "poor chickens" that are eaten. If it weren't for us, the chickens would become extinct by the coyotes and other predators, so they owe us a big favor.

Well I sure hope we will still be eating fish, I could not suvive without my delicious sushi. But aren't fish like the bluefin tuna being fished to near extinction?

I don't know maybe so, but not salmon and 'ahi tuna I would think as they are in demand as food, so they are raised for that purpose.

In my opinion, fish is only food in sushi. (Yeah, I meant good, but so what?)

Well farm raised fish are not very good for you because they do not eat as they would in the wild. They lack like important omegas or amino acids or something, I dunno my grampa is the expert on that. But I think farm raised fish is better than no fish at all. Atleast they aren't extinct.

OMG I'd never eat eel or octopus! I don't think I've ever had sushi.

Oh my goodness, sushi is SO effing good! Everybody thinks it's just raw fish. So wrong. Unagi is cooked, and it's covered in a sweet brown sauce over rice. It's warm and it practically melts in your mouth. My fave sushi has warm cream cheese and it's fried. Yum yum. Octopus isn't quite as flavorful, but it has a great chewy texture, and the little tentacles are so cute and fun to eat. They still have the suction cups and everything. Have yall ever tried escargot?

Sushi does sound good, but octopus sounds gross . I only eat fish/seafood that have fins and scales. I don't know what escargot is...

The sushi I eat is raw fish, cucumber and paprica in rice, wrapped in seaweed. Escargot? No idea what that is...

French cuisine yall, come on. Snails? I thought everybody knew what escargot was. I had some in a garlic butter sauce, but I don't know if I like them or not. They have a really cool texture though. Sorta like mushrooms. I do eat the sushi with raw fish too, but it tastes so much better when it's warm. I don't really like sashimi as much, which is just a raw piece of flesh on top of rice. I like the vegatables and different sauces. Have you tried the kind with caviar, Dyl? I don't think it tastes very good, but the caviar are feally fun to pop with your teeth.

No. But I have tried with fisheggs, I guess that produces the same sensation. Snails? I'll refrain from commenting as I've never tasted it, but... *bleurgh* I prefer meat, medium rare, for vegetables any day. I especially hate cooked carrots, come on, CARROST ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CRUNCHY. And peas and corn are best when eaten cold.
On a side note, from global worming to Finland to cuisine...
