Danger Zone
Chapter I-Enter the Danger Zone
Chawua liked life. She rode in the prestigious Parxet Riding School, was part of the Parxet Riding Club, and the instructor-Missy West-had offered her a place in the Cross-country school Parxet would organize. Soon it would be time for the horse draws. Chawua liked Knoxy best, but Dicey, Rolls and Royal were also good. She wouldn't want to ride either of the two new horses, though. Mircie Addams said Holistic would buck at the slightest tap with the crop, and Doppler was even worse. Then, the draws started in the Parxet tack room. Missy West and the course-keeper, Trisha Gren, would draw the horses out of a hat. Missy started.
-Mircie Addams gets Radically Royal, Missy said. There went Royal.
-Chawua Bjent gets Knox Spots, Trisha Gren said. She'd gotten Knoxy!
-Kristyn Epoche gets Waywod Fajer, Missy continued. Chawua'd never heard of Kristyn before, but Fyrry was sensitive in the mouth.
-Njinja Kait's got Marchesfeild Pferd, Trisha went. Njinja was not the bravest rider, and Ferdi was quite lazy.
-And lastly, Callista Wood gets Doppler Syndrome, Missy ended, -and then we start with the second group...But Chawua didn't listen. Callista was a good rider, but Doppler was reportedly crazy.
Chapter II-the Edge of the Danger Zone
Callista loved the feeling that Doppler bended under her, on her gentle command. Faith was on her side. Doppler was undisputably the best horse in group one. Callista watched Mircie work hard on getting Royal to bend, Chawua humping the saddle in a desperate attempt to get Knoxy to move forward, Njinja nervously asking Ferdi to move, and saw the teacher yelling at Kristyn Epoche to loosen the reins. Good that they'd gotten Trisha Gren as their teacher.
Then they had an uneventful showjumping lesson, and progressed on the the cross-country bit. Njinja didn't dare make Ferdi go over the log pile, and Fyrry refusing half the time because Kirstyn had her reins too tight. Trisha still made them all go over the 'Basic Novice Junior' course, which was dead easy. Then, they had a theory lesson.
-There are four pony classes. Starting from the easiest, they are: Basic Novice Pony, In-depth Novice Pony, Basic Intermediate Pony and In-depth Intermediate Pony. There aren't and Advanced Pony classes, because girls grow to 16 so fast they can barely reach In-depth Advanced. From that you transfer to a few In-depth Intermediate Juniors and advance from there up. This is important, since you're in your last pony years, all of you-well, maybe not Razeeka, she's only twelve-but the rest of you. And Zingie's already seventeen, aren't you?
-Tomorrow, the curly-haired Zinkie replied sheepishly.
-Well, on with the lesson. The Junior classes are-again from easiest to most difficult-Basic Novice Junior, In-depth Novice Junior, Basic Intermediate Junior, In-depth Intermediate Junior, Basic Advanced Junior and In-depth Advanced Junior. Any questions?
And so ended the girls' first day of the x-c course.
Chapter III-Approach of the Danger Zone
-After this week, four of us get on the chance to get on the Parxet X-C Juniors Training Ring. The four best will be picked, Mircie Addams brought the news.
Callista looked at the over-confident Mircie. Mircie was short and thin, with platinum blonde hair and brown eyes.
-I don't think anyone from Group Two get on. Razeeka hates competing, Zinkie's studies are taking too much time, Allisha isn't up to it, and neither are Zorla or Kari, Kirstyn explained. Only now did Callista get a good look at her. Kirstyn had a small, up-turned nose, narrow face, black hair packed into tight curls, and cold grey eyes.
-But then the question remains. Who of us will drop out? Njinja asked. Njinja had small, pale, slightly bulged eyes, giving her her constantly scared expression, and a thin-lipped mouth which was constantly open, emphasizing the aforementioned expression.
-You, Mircie sneered. Kirstyn laughed so loud it must've been faked.
-Don't be nasty, Chawua ordered. Chawua was the only dark-skinned girl on the course. She had long, curly eyelashes, raven-black hair which was tightly plaited, and brown eyes. Callista seriously wondered was she the only brunette on the course. She was probably also the only blue-eyed one.
Chapter IV: Preparing for the qualifications of the Danger Zone
Callista saw the stride. One, two, three! And Doppler soared trough the air, leaving the four feet of oxer far underneath. Curved line to the combination, and over-one stride-fly!-one stride-fly again! Sharp turn to the right, triple bar! Doppler stretched over it like a black jaguar, hardly stirring the sand upon landing. Now, final gallop to the finish, go, go, GO, Doppler, Callista thought. Doppler had a sprint of speed, and took off like a cheetah. They'd passed it! Now Callista relaxed and watched the others go over it.
Chawua's Knoxy had become lame, so she rode the slightly more responsive Xa Ha, four faults on the first jump. Njinja's Ferdi jumped with a weird style, and Njinja came off at jumps three, six and eight. Kirstyn's Fyrry still refused every jump once or twice before jumping it, and Mircie's Royal was stiff as a board.
Chapter V: Qualify to the Danger Zone
-Okay girls, there are ten of you, and four get on the ring. Six will have to either drop completely, or wait and come to next year's course. So no hard feelings, okay? said Missy.
-Here are the four people that get on the ring and their mounts, Trisha announced, -Firstly, Callista Wood and Doppler Syndrome. The other three are Kari Williams-Royal Blue; Kirstyn Epoche-Helix; and Njinja Kait-Doppelganger.
Chapter VI: the Danger Zone
Their teacher was Lycinda Lyghtwood. She was blonde and short, with green-brown eyes. She was so small she could still ride on her first pony, Brentjeberg's Tango King, or "Tang" as he was known around the barn. Tang was twenty-nine, and in top condition. His silver-white coat gleamed in the sunlight. His dam was the overgrown new forest Brentjeberg's Disco Queen (Bacgaard Disco Ball/Brentjeberg's Dance Queen), and his sire the arabian Marvel Haze (Marble Maze/Hazy Marvel).
Now, with the mares Doppler and Blue in one paddock, Callista noted the differences and similarities. Doppler was a threequarters Hanoverian, quarter Arab mare with a dished profile and jumping power to reach the moon. Her markingless black coat gleamed blue in the sunlight. Royal Blue was a silver-colored gray Arab/Connemara with a blue tint and dished profile. Callista moved to the gelding paddock, where Ferdi, Helix, Doppelganger and Superbee were. Superbee was a dun Newfoundland. Ferdi was a light chestnut Finnhorse/Highland/Shetland/Fell cross, with the undisputable Finnhorse flaxen chestnut color, Fell build, Highland's elegance, and the Shetland's small size. Helix was a Palomino, his coat gleamed the color of the sun, the color of a gold coin. Helix's breed was probably TWH/Arab cross, with some pony thrown in, too. Doppelganger was a dark chestnut, almost black, with extensive leg and belly markings. A Oldenburger/FWB cross that he was, he had the heavy warmblood movements and the ugly warmblood head.
Chapter V: Awaiting the Danger
The late summer passed, along with the autumn. August, September and October went by, one day at a time. In mid-November the snow came, and the ground, previously soft and a bit soggy, was now hard and crisp. The horses, especially Doppelganger, were uplifted, having more energy than ever in the cool winter air.
All trough this period, the girls still had cross-country, showjumping and dressage practices.
