Messier Octology 1
After Earth
Carrie and Kari were twins. Fraternal twins. Carrie was a dirty blonde with emerald green eyes. Kari was a redhead with blue eyes. Otherwise, the twins were identical in appearance: tall and leggy, fifteen, thin, fit as fleas. But on personality, you could tell them apart a lightyear away. Carrie overglamourized herself-queenly blonde, emerald green eyes etc.-while Kari would have been a down-to-Earth person-if Earth hadn't been swallowed up by a black hole some 5422 years ago. Humankind had settled in the Black Eye Galaxy, M64. That's where it all happened.
It was M64 year 5400, Blue (equivalent of October) day 38 (the Heran year was 400 days long, split into 10 months of 40 days). Kari and Carrie's fifteenth birthday. As in Heran custom, the girls recieved a single gift. Carrie's was a beauty set. Kari's was a laptop version of the supercomputer Deep Space, capable as being an encyclopedia, a calculator, a guide, as well as a million trillion books.
Kari was interested in the Universe. In the M64 Greek Solar System Group, all surrounded by one heliopause. No-one in living memory had crossed it. The last crossing was in the year 0. There were twelve morealess tight-knit Systems. Nardicia Ecrom, the last Earthern person, kept saying, "There's no place like home", and "Sol is home. This is not Sol. Even if Aris tried as hard as it could, it still wouldn't be home."
The more Kari learned, the more Kari wanted to learn. She learned that the Systems-Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Aris, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis and Hephaestus-were named after Earth mythology; that their planets were named after other gods of greek mythology, and that the moons had invented names. She already knew the Heran system-Hera, its planets Hebe, Eris and Nemesis, each of their moons (Tchret, Mædal and Megyo, respectively)-but the other systems! How much to learn! Zeus' planets were Euronyme, Aglaia, Euphrosune and Thalia; Poseidon's was Demeter and its moons Qwerty, Poiuyt and Æxœtø; Hades' was Persephone; Hestia's was Dionysus; Aris' was Eros; Athena's were Tisiphone, Megaera, Alecto and Megaera's moon Megaerä; Apollo's were Helios and Thanatos; Aphrodite's was Thanatos; Hermes' was Pan; Artemis' were Urania, Clio, Melpomene, Thalia, Terpsichore, Calliope, Erato, Polyhymnia and Euterpe; while Hephaestus' were Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. She also learned that Nemesis was the only of the Greian planets unexplored, and that the Heran system had a slight heliopause seperating itself from the rest of Greia.
Kari shut down Deep Minispace. How could people sit around when there were planets to be explored? When Nemesis was at their doorstep, so close to her home on Eris? Oh, the thought! When Kari was a kid, she'd been more interested in the mysteries of life than anyone else. About why some people could see trough defences, bust the lie instantly, while others could not. Why Hebe, being closer to Hera than Eris, was colder than Eris. Oh, how the mysteries kept gathering, and only Kari wanted to solve them! Oh, how the rest of the world was oblivious to these mysteries! But then again, how would people like me live without mysteries, Kari often thought.
And so soon, after two days came new year, and the month Black, named so since the snow had not yet fallen, and Hera was only a spot. At this time, Hebe's elliptical orbit brought it outside Eris' orbit, making Eris the cherished inner one. The month passed in parties, and on the fortieth, snow fell. The next day it was already White, in two respects.
-Karie, why d u spnd s mch tm n dat cmptr? Fashion's mvd n n ur wrng thins dat wr nvr fshnbl, Carrie had creeped up behind her.
-Well, Curry-
-Dnt cl m CURRY!!!! Carrie was ferocious, even if she didn't know what that ment.
-Well, C-a-r-r-i-e, because I truly despise fashion and, honestly, don't want to know about it, Kari replied.
-OK. G2g. Bu, tll m hw t spl dat 'ntly' wrd dat u usd. G2 mk n abbr 4 dat.
The rest of White was pretty uneventful, and so were the following Violet, Red and Orange. In Yellow, however, a chance to go to Hebe arrived in the form of cousin Stycca's letter.
"Hi Kari & Carrie,
I'm thinking, could one of you come stay with me till next Orange? Ask your mother for permission. We could start the Last Year here in Pe'Məl school.
Please come,
Stycca"
Kari wanted to go while Carrie stayed home.
Kari arrived at the end of Orangeyellow school holiday. For the LYers-who had had a year of holiday after their Y8-school was bumpy. But Kari managed.
In the end of Green, Kari asked for a spaceship to explore Nemesis. LYers had a significant advantage over everyone else: they were sixteen, Heran adults. But Kari had to wait until the thirty-eighth of Blue.
On the thirty-eighth of Blue, when Kari was legally sixteen, she was allowed explore Nemesis and its moon Megyo. She set off at once.
Kari was the first human being ever to set foot on Nemesis. Nemesis was a luxurious royal blue, with mauve oceans and turquoise treetops. Megyo hang in the sky, big and ruddy red. Megyo moved fast, because it orbited Nemesis in the opposite direction of Nemesis' spin.

Qui looked in the mirror. When Earth had been destroyed ninety-nine ha ago, some of the survivors had escaped to NGC 2392. She was part of that population. Or she would have been, if she hadn't been cloned from a lock of red hair from who knows where. The NGC 2392ans, or twuans, had almost completely abandoned their Earthly traditions. They had readily made contact with the Quixi-and some had been destroyed. Some humans. No-one cared. Death was trivial in Twua, orbiting Xzu.
You might have noticed that Qui was part of Quixi. That was because, in the Twua language, Qui meant strange or stranger, and Xi meant enemy. Qui was a stranger, and the Quixi were strange enemies. The least common word in Twuan was Etreel, Earth

M64 year 5385. Karinna Ayckepfeer (Ey-keep-fair) had just given birth to a single child. Carrie was the name of the dirty blonde green-eyed child. But just that day, Karinna was in the science center, doing a small share of work to keep the center alive. And before their very eyes, a schausaclistic tear in space-time appeared. And out popped a newborn child. Redhead girl with eyes like sparkling sapphires. And Karinna took her home with a name that her workmate Andy Jonson had given: 'Kari'.
***
Kari explored Nemesis and Megyo, coming to Hebe and Eris rarely over the coming Black, White and Violet. She explored every nock and cranny of Megyo and then Nemesis, but she couldn't percieve the great threat that Nemesis posed...

The Rosette Nebula's qui, Anja-tola, was young. Too young. On Earth, the qui would be called either a queen or an empress. Its etymology didn't come from earth, however. It came from the Yatri. The Yatri were aliens with four eel-like legs, about as high as a horse, a tail with chopping blades at the end-almost like a mini-mouth-but the most striking thing about them was the head. It was a homan head. But it didn't have a nose or a mouth. The eyes were strikingly blue, and the hair was purple.
But back to Anja-tola. She was a girl of eight-with all the power of the rosette nebula. Her hair was blonde. Her eyes were grey. Her skin was pure white. The previous qui, Epke-vume, had died, leaving her daughter Anja-tola to care for the Rosette Nebula. Epke-vume had had a sister, Ymhy-siky, but the Aorans had overthrown her, and her supporting Zornans. The real person controlling the world was Zma-mza, an evil Aoran girl of fifteen. The Zornans in the highest positions were Captain Xena and Lill Zornan. Captain Xena, also known as Clio Eshka, was the chief bodyguard of the qui, the only non-qi allowed on the qi balcony. Lill Zornan was plain Lill, but there were other Lills in the Rosette Nebula-or the roz, as it was called-but this Lill was the only Zornan Lill, so they called her Lill Zornan.

Qui looked around her room. Seven feet by six feet, and seven feet tall. Bed in the middle, shelves on one side, desk, wardrobe. Qui's life was books. She hated speaking. She didn't show any expresssion on her face. In school, she preferred reading, maybe writing, to speaking. She was inquisitive, her sense of curiosity thrived, reading every book she came across.
Qui didn't show her feelings, but that didn't mean that she didn't have them. In fact, she overflowed them, but she didn't tell ayone or anything-except her books. Sci-fi, history, fantasy, novels, dictionaries...There was not a book that she hadn't laid her hands on, not a page not turned. And to them, her best and only friends, she told everything.
One day Qui found a perfectly good book, entitled the Aliens of Twua, in the dumpster. This scavenging of rubbish bins had brought Qui all her books. Qui read it. She already knew about the Quixi-but the Vijji and the Kolth had been previously unknown to her. The Vijji were tall, fast, powerful, muscular, sleek four-legged creatures, running on one toe, others not visible, tail in a flag of victory. The Kolth were black arthropod-like twelve-legged things, with fourteen eyes and a spaghetti-like tail.

Kari walked upon the soil of Megyo. Looking up, she saw Nemesis whizzing past in its celestial beauty. You could not appreciate Nemesis till you had walked on Megyo, looking up to it. Its blue color calmed you, its mauve oceans brought happiness to their onlookers, its turquoise treetops came with mystique unique to Nemesis. Nemesis was the least Earthlike of the Greian planets. It was also the most awe-inspiring. And beautiful. To see Nemesis hang in the black, diamond-studded sky, a sapphire more precious than any other, was the most beautiful sight in the Universe.
Kari turned. Her air was running low. She headed back to the Negsisyo, calmly walking after doing geographical measurements.
Now Kari was on Nemesis. She saw Hera. Hera was the bringer of life, an eternal friend to the three planets existing in its habitable zone.

-Captain Xena! The Xollolongos are attacking!
Xena turned. General Genral was speeding along the corridoor to meet her. She sighed. Genral must be bringing another report from Xzanti Mµ or Qwerty Opŋ.
-What are Xollolongos exactly, asked Xena.
-I dunno, Deep-Scanner Mµ just used the term. And Assistant Deep-Scanner Opŋ backed 'er up, replied Genral. Captain Xena sighed.
-What'd w'do, Cappy Xena, asked Genral.
-Ignore them, like always, replied Xena.
-But w't 'bout wen dey com? An wat 'bout de Raxxin, asked Genral.
-Sush! That's top secret! The aliens will never come, they're propably just ordinary space debris, and as for it, well, kill it. No use keeping it out for more than's needed, dully replied Xena.

It was 3rd December 2487, Earth. Catticatura NaGlitsh had given birth to quintuplets. Three were sent to different space-time holes. Two were sent to the dusky realms of space. For the quintuplets, the space-sent ones would be to die, only their locks of hair to survive. The others might've survived, to be found sooner or later...

Kari was on Nemesis. She watched Megyo orbit. Megyo moved at unfathomable speeds, so it could actually be seen moving.
***
N'z>ek 74 watched the human. They had come long ago, driven the Grətiga to Nemesis, the only uncolonized point. And now they were here. “Why did they come, N'z>ek?”, asked small C'x>aw 01.
“The humans are brutal and selfish. In the early days of their settlement-only 5.4 units ago-their nervous explorers slayed several-including the then-Commander M'n>ab 11 and the explorer Z'x>ac 00. The humans will kill. The only solution is that we have to kill them first, C'x>aw.”
***
Kari brought her friends-Ninya, Eanee and Universicae-as well as Carrie and some important people with her on her next visit to Nemesis. However, first she showed them Megyo in all its greenness.
-Good you showed us Megyo too. In my opinion, the moons are just as important, one of the councils said.
The trip might have pulled trough successfully, if only Carrie hadn't wanted to land next to the lake Xena quickly dubbed 'Redlake'.
***
Q'w>er 99 watched as the humans proceeded. “Itis almost time”, he said to his d'putee in-command, P't>or 43, “Call the attack. Änd start with the redhead.”
***
Kari felt a beam of intense light whizz past her. It felt, even at some distance, to be freezing cold. She was mildly aware of Carrie screaming. Another beam. This was closer, and confirmed her suspicions. She took a side note that now everyone except Universicae and she were screaming.
-Kari. Look. Gia- Giant slug.
At this point Kari turned. There was some creature, somewhere in between slug, water and jelly, that was limbering over the hill with some sort of ray gun.
-Let's go, she shouted.

When they were back on Eris, Kari wrapped herself into a ball.
Carrie had taken a hit.

Really, it's perfect symbiosis. I hate the world, and it hates me. There's no way out from that. If I liked it, it would kill me. It's kind that way. One to M64, one to the Rosette nebula, and one to NGC 2392, here. However, these were at best vague directions to find them. But I will find them. And that's why I hate life, the Universe and everything. To stay alive.
