Messier Octology 2
World of War
Qui had a paradox to face. Qui loved books. Qui didn't like diaries. Diaries were books. Dilemma. Qui decided to like diaries, so the books wouldn't think she would betray them. She was their friend. So Qui started her diary.
"Really, it's perfect symbiosis. I hate the world, and it hates me. There's no way out from that. If I liked it, it would kill me. It's kind that way. But I want to know why we are here, where are the other civilizations-if there are any-and where are the other humans. Three craft were launched from the dying Earth. One to M64, one to the Rosette nebula, and one to NGC 2392, here. However, these were at best vague directions to find them. But I will find them. And that's why I hate life, the Universe and everything. To stay alive.”
***
Kari still felt guilty for Carrie. Carrie had been killed by a ray/beam from giant slugs of the planet Nemesis. Third rock from Hera. No-one was safe. Kari was on Eris, second rock from Hera. Hera was a star a bit bigger than the Sun, its orbiting planets Hebe, Eris and Nemesis, from in to out.
Kari decided to volunteer for the schausaclistic tear project. Easy. Jump into the schausaclistic tear (or the Tear), and press the button. If you survived that long.
***
"Guess what? The scientists who cloned me-and are thefore responsible for my existance-are letting me live in the lab!”
Qui fit right in. Firstly, she read all the books they had there, including some insanely complicated ones, then she assisted the scientists-Herbert Herrberet, Norman Nwray, Cassini Kappelyushnikova, Tamara Da Siy and Rodor Pompej-in their experiments.
***
Clio Eshka was mad. Anja-tola–the qui of the Rosette nebula, or Roz for short–her supporters, the Aorans had kicked her from her position, the bodyguard of the qui. One day, Captain Xena. The next day, plain ol' Clio Eshka. She was mad. She wanted revenge.
And she wanted it on the Aorans.
***
Kari stepped on the platform. Tear day. She might die. Who cared. She wanted to die. She'd caused the death of her twin.
She stepped in.
***
Qui was busy reading. No school. Good. She was going trough the Hyperspatial maths, part XXVIII the seventh time. Not good.
-Qui? Mind coming? You may want to see this... said Cassini, or Dr Kappelyushnikova, if you wanted to be official.
Qui followed her.
***
Blinding flash of light. Spinning, spinning, spinning... Nothing. Everything. Nothing. Everything. Kari landed with a splash.
She came round.
-Qui? What are you doing there? came a voice.
-My name is Kari, Kari tried to say, but ended up saying -M mmf m mmmy.
-What?
Kari sat up, spat the mud out of her mouth, and practically yelled, -My name is Kari!
-Carrie?
-Kari. K-A-R-I.
-You better come in Kari.
Kari stood up, tried to brush the mud out of her clothes, and, failing that, followed the guy with the Russian accent and a white lab coat.
The guy turned out to be a woman of about thirty. And she called for someone called Cassini to get someone called Qui.
***
Qui followed Cassini. Then, she saw it.
-You called me to test your new mirror? It doesn't even work! snapped Qui.
-You call me a reflection?
-Okay. It isn't a mirror. Who are you?
-Kari Ayckepfeer. Of Eris. I'm sixteen.
-Where's Eris? Where is it?
-Eris orbits Hera, middlemost of the three planets, and it's in M64.
Everyone just stood there. Tamara broke the silence.
-And how did you get here, exactly?
-Schausaclistic tear.
The rest of the nigt was spent questioning this Kari.
"How freaky! A total, utter, perfect copy of me came to the lab today, trough a schausaclistic tear! Except that she's Kari Ayckepfeer (Ey-keep-fair), and she's a year older than me. Freaky!”
***
Clio Eshka sprinted trough the maze of tunnels to the center of the planet. The headquarters of Zorna. Left, left, right, straight, right, third door from the right, down, down, right, straight, left. The globe that floated in the air was the HQ of Zorna. And the center of the planet.
Clio Eshka leaped.
***
Two days after the appearance of Kari, the postman-Lehr Layere-brought terrible news.
"Lehr Layere brought terrible, horrible news! The Fas have declared war on the Kys. As you know, they're the two countries on this single continent. Then there's the no-man's land where we are-Labbea. Disaster! Paraqai'ia has become a world of war!”
***
Clio Eshka landed in the globe. From the inside it was larger than the electric blue person-sized globe of the outside. That was to do with the extra space in the 6th D. In other words, the space had six dimentions-up and down, forward and backward, side to side, before and after, and the fifth D that permitted some sort of mind-reading, as well as the sixth D that would permit people to travel faster than light.
***
"I do not like the look of this at all! It's war out here, and I hate it! The lab's fairly bombproof, but the Kys have manned Labbea, us included! I hate the Kys soliders. They're thugs who speak with a curious accent of Intergalactic. The Fas are, if possible, worse. You cannot understand a single word of the trawl they call Intergalactic. Their average IQ is 85. My IQ–and Kari's they measured it–is 156.”
