This is the blog for Aswad Al-Fahl. He will have his activity posted here, day by day, or at least every day I have time for my horses.

January 17, 2008 -Aswad Al-Fahl woke up at 8:00 and it was a bright spring morning. It was 54º F. (12º C). Cool still. First thing in the morning he participated in horse riding lessons for children until 10:00. Then he was given a carrot (first bite of food for the day). He was placed in the pasture for 2 hours 30 minutes, and he found an apple, but wasn't allowed to eat it (it went into my stock). Then he was allowed a drink of water, which took 15 minutes! Then he was placed in the box for 1 hours and 30 minutes, where he lost a bit of morale (he doesn't like the box too much). Then he was groomed (he enjoyed that, but he tried to step on my toes). He was then allowed to have his salt stone. He was then fed 6 pounds of forage (oh, yay, he's not fat any more!) and 90 ounces of cereals (without the milk, lol). Next he went galloping for 1 hour. Stamina training is complete, so he doesn't tire after 1 hour of constant galloping. Then he went trotting for 1 hour (probably should have been first, to warm him up). Uh oh! Aswad Al-Fahl has eaten a toxic plant during the ride (St John's Wort poisoning) and has fallen ill! (I think he needs to learn not to eat while he is being ridden; "But it looked so pretty"). Woops, so he's back in his stall, is more sensitive to sunstroke (?), and has lost 10% in health! So I rush over to Mr. Hubert's store and buy an anti-poisoning capsule. Aswad Al-Fahl doesn't think he wants it, so I give it to him with apple sauce. So the capsule improves his health, but he is still ill. St. John's Wort Poisoning. Apparently, Aswad Al-Fahl thought it looked tasty.Aswad Al-Fahl insists that he is well, so I go for an hour of trotting with him. When we come back, I stroke him a couple of times, after which he feels more energetic. Then he goes into the pasture for 2 hours 30 minutes. Then he is given a turnip, his favorite treat because it gives him so much energy! Aswad Al-Fahl is then put into the pasture for the night.

Don't work him if he has eaten a toxic plant!

He'll be fine after 25 hours. I've had horses get sick before, and it has never been a problem.

I know, it's hard with all the greenstars running in the easy competitions. I had trouble getting Ouranos Silver Stars to 100 BLUP, but I think what helped is that I competed him only in show jumping competitions which are the shortest and take the least amount of energy. In this way I was able to do more competitions per day, and he eventually reached 20 wins.

If I were you, I'd finish training, then finish rides, then go on to competitions. He has a better chance of winning a competition if he has all his training and rides complete. And the more lessons you do, the better.

I do 2 lessons a day on ALL my horses,I've started speed training,And I'm doing some rides on him.He allways goes to bed with around 70% energy cause it's practically impossible to bring it down.He only loses 5% energy from a cross-country comp with difficulty of 79% plus they don't bring him any skills.
